Graphic Designer

The Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA), the largest airline pilot union in the world and the largest non-governmental aviation safety organization in the world (representing over 64,000 pilots at 39 U.S. and Canadian airlines) seeks an experienced Graphic Designer in our McLean Virginia, office to help expand our growing team. The Graphic Designer generates original designs for digital and print using Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, among other software, to support ALPA’s priorities.

Examples of products include:

• Campaign branding and strategy
• Social media and website graphics
• Infographics
• Digital and print advertising graphics
• Documents and whitepapers for print and digital use
• Long-form publications
• Promotional items such as t-shirts, lanyards, bag tags, and water bottles

They must be able to work as part of a design and production team to manage and execute unique and complex requests from multiple clients, often on tight deadlines.

Success in this position requires daily creativity. While many projects will be similar in nature, the Graphic Designer’s goal is to always apply current design best practices and trends to make our products the best quality possible.

Along with creativity, a successful candidate will also possess patience, excellent listening and communication skills, and the ability to accurately interpret artistic direction and feedback. Projects range in difficulty from simple Microsoft Office manipulation, to multi-channeled campaigns for digital and print placements, and long form documents. The ideal candidate will understand the clear differences between print and digital products and be able to move between the two without friction.

Candidates should be prepared to show samples of their work and complete a design exercise upon interview.

Minimum Requirements:

• Three (3) years of graphic design experience required, five (5) years or more strongly preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in relevant area, e.g., Commercial, Fine Art, or Design, from an accredited college or university; or, the equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
• Must be highly proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator (XD preferred).
• An ability to seamlessly move between print and digital designs, understanding key differences in materials, colors, platforms, and ideal software.
• Solid knowledge of digital platforms, social media content, and digital ads.
• Familiarity with how social media and digital advertising platforms are utilized.
• Experience working with digital document creation and publishing.
• Ability to design differently for different audiences.
• Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint required.
• Willingness to learn new software and keep abreast of industry trends.
• Excellent graphic design skills required.
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills, oral and written, for effective interaction with internal staff, external contacts, line pilots, pilot committees, governing bodies, and vendors.
• Ability to multi-task and work well under tight deadlines with minimum supervision.
• A desire to keep up with design trends and to continuously learn about the Association and its goals.
• Keen attention to detail.
• Understanding of print production process a plus.
• Experience with web design a plus.
