Health & Safety Specialist II
Works with some direction to plan, organize and supervise fire suppression, technical rescue and hazardous materials emergency response activities under consultative direction toward predetermined goals and objectives.
Assist with the development and implementation of pre-plans and standard operating procedures to ensure an effective fire protection and emergency response program.
Assist with the direction of the department’s training for in-service fire department personnel and act as a liaison to public sector fire services.
Function as the Incident Commander during emergency situations.
Directly assist in the implementation of programs and procedures to ensure employee and facility safety is in accordance with all OSHA, NFPA and Life Safety Code requirements.
Designs, inspects, tests and maintains fire protection systems and equipment to ensure that in an emergency they operate and perform to standards.
Analyze all facets of any fire to determine the origin, cause, and what, if any, breakdown in the fire protection plans and procedures may have occurred.
Draft remedial plans and procedures for approval by management.
Develop and maintain emergency procedures and personnel accountability systems.
Review and approve material and equipment requisitions, new and modified processes and non-routine work.
Works with minimal direction in providing input to departmental resources on EH&S related matters.
Provides support in implementation of measures to help protect employees from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.
Investigates accidents to identify root causes, reports results to management, and supports the implementation of corrective actions.
Inspects and evaluates workplace environments, equipment and practices in order to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations and provides recommendations for improvements.
Supports engineers/management in the institution of control and remedial measures for hazardous and potentially hazardous conditions or equipment.
Supports management in the EH&S training of employees.
Participates in multi-discipline problem solving teams.
Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.
Required for the Health & Safety Specialist
Four-year college degree in related safety science field, engineering or manufacturing.
3+ years of safety or manufacturing experience.
Preferred for the Health & Safety Specialist
Familiarity with local clients and markets.
Ability to identify developmental needs of others and coach, mentor, or otherwise help others to improve their knowledge, skills and abilities.
Ability to provide consultation and/or expert advice or testimony.
Ability to deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact and professionalism.
Ability to operate applicable fire apparatus and equipment.
Ability to develop approaches for implementation of an idea, program or change in operations.
Ability to plan, organize and prioritize time and workload in order to accomplish tasks and meet deadlines.
Ability to read, interpret and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and/or procedures.
Ability to develop and/or implement new policies/procedures/standards and/or rules/regulations.
Ability to deliver presentations or training using acceptable methods and techniques.
Ability to communicate information and ideas clearly, and concisely, in writing.
Ability to speak before a group of people.
Ability to work independently with little or no supervision.
Ability to lead the work of others by monitoring, reviewing, training co-workers and/or delegating work.
