Each teacher’s class consists of six students. Students spend part of the day in whole-group instruction (e.g., literature and social studies classes), part of the day in smaller groups (e.g., math class) and part of the day with a teaching assistant or teacher for one-to-one instruction.
Teacher’s Job Description – A teacher’s main job is to deliver an instructional plan to each student that is customized to his or her unique academic and social needs. Our head of school and head of instruction develop these programs during the admissions process, which a student goes through before school enrollment. The teacher then delivers the student’s customized plan, collects data and observes the student’s responses to the instruction. The teacher meets regularly with his or her supervisor to evaluate the plan’s effectiveness and make instructional adjustments as needed. He or she also works closely with the teaching assistant, who helps deliver one-to-one instruction.
After the school day, some teachers work one-on-one with regularly scheduled tutorial students. Teachers and students follow customized instructional programs that may include remediating basic skills, homework and study skills coaching, or tutoring in specific subjects.
Teacher Training and Supervision – At the beginning of employment, teachers and teaching assistants receive intensive training that enables them to work effectively with their assigned students. This training, which lasts about a month, includes: a) understanding the nature of the various academic barriers and how they impact learning; b) the scope and sequence of each subject and skill that we teach students; c) what it takes to learn each subject and skill well; d) why some students have problems learning them; e) how to teach these subjects and skills effectively and in a way that improves one’s ability to learn; and f) how to promote students’ emotional, behavioral and social growth.
After the initial training, teachers receive ongoing supervision and further training throughout the school year in various topics and skills.
