SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
The Education Strategist will support and expand the NYCLU’s efforts to engage Indigenous communities and support their civil rights policy goals, primarily in the field of education. The Education Strategist will strengthen the organization’s relationships with individual young people as well as public schools, childcare centers, and community organizations working in Indigenous communities through public education, legislative advocacy, limited direct services, workshop and program development, and community outreach.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support development and coordination of NYCLU’s growing relationships with Indigenous/Native communities;
- Develop and implement issue-specific campaigns to expand and protect the civil rights and liberties of Indigenous educators, children, and families in New York State;
- Build a network to help to advance our agenda; collaborate with the Education Center Advisory Committee as needed;
- Organize community forums, town halls, and related events in support of the mission of the NYCLU and the Center;
- Expand NYCLU’s reach by developing, promoting, and facilitating multimedia workshops and trainings;
- Work alongside Education Policy Center staff and allies to identify opportunities for policy change at the state and municipal level; stay abreast of developments in assigned issue areas;
- Develop strategic partnerships with public schools and youth-focused organizations;
- In coalition with educators, parents, and community partners, engage in direct advocacy with elected officials and policymakers.
QUALIFICATIONS
The Education Strategist uses a broad knowledge of NYCLU mission, vision, and values to carry out responsibilities. This requires a substantive understanding of the NYCLU’s work around education reform, and classroom or youth organizing experience, as well as a basic familiarity with legislative advocacy, lobbying, and community organizing. In addition, a successful candidate for this position will have:
- Demonstrated experience working with and alongside Indigenous/Native American communities as an advocate or organizer;
- A basic understanding of the legal and/or the legislative landscape of relevant laws, treaties and/or leadership on Native regions in New York State;
- Strong facilitation skills and the ability to conduct workshops for both adult and youth learners;
- A personal commitment to the principals of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace and in the field, along with the demonstrated ability to build relationships across difference;
- Ability to prioritize and complete tasks with minimal supervision, with a proven ability to manage and meet deadlines;
- A demonstrated ability to advocate effectively, including an ability to initiate and follow through on a legislative or campaign effort and a passion for working with the public;
- A commitment to the goals and priorities of the NYCLU;
- Ability to thrive in a complex, fast paced, and collaborative working environment;
- Ability to travel within New York State for work-related meetings and events and access to reliable transportation within the Central New York region;
- Availability for occasional evening and weekend hours (with notice);
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field;
- Masters degree in a relevant field preferred.
